An aluminium billet is a cylindrical semi-finished product that is heated and forced through a die to create an extrusion profile with a constant cross-section. Alloy selection, homogenisation, diameter, length and metallurgical quality affect processability and the final profile.
A professional enquiry should state at least the required EN AW alloy, dimensions, intended application, required temper after extrusion, applicable standard and inspection documents. Availability and production suitability are confirmed for each enquiry.
EN AW-6060 and EN AW-6063 are often selected for readily extrudable profiles and a high-quality surface finish. EN AW-6005 and EN AW-6082 are used where different mechanical or structural properties are required. The alloy designation alone is not enough: temper, wall thickness, geometry, tolerances and post-treatment also determine performance.
Chemical limits must be checked against the current applicable standard and the producer’s material certificate. Do not use a sample analysis as an order specification.
Aluminium ingot is a cast raw material for remelting and further processing. Trade names such as A5, A6, A7 and A8 refer to purity classes, but the required composition and maximum permitted impurities must be defined contractually and supported by analysis certificates.
State the required form, mass or dimensional range, chemical specification, intended use, packaging and traceability requirements. Price, volume and delivery schedule can only follow after these details have been reviewed.
Do not compare quotations on material price alone. Also verify alloy and batch traceability, inspection documents, logistics terms, Incoterms, origin and the contractual allocation of import responsibilities.
Whether aluminium is covered by CBAM depends, among other things, on product classification and the agreed import model. Define per order who is the importer, which emissions data are available and how any CBAM obligations and costs will be handled.
For extrusion projects, the profile drawing is the primary reference. Where available, include a DWG, DXF, STEP, STP or PDF file together with alloy, temper, surface treatment, machining, annual volume, delivery country and requested schedule.
